Metadata Analysis

In the metadata analysis step, we identified the metadata standards for the content and structure of our different items and their relative types.

While some institutions clearly declared their standards (such as the British Museum or the Library of Congress), for other items a proper declaration was not available. We thus decided to apply a more generic metadata standard suitable for these types of items, notably for digital items such as GIFs or images on social media.

Metadata Aligment

Once defined, we aligned those metadata standards and properties that are useful to address information on our items, people, events and concepts, all the while trying to ensure interoperability between them all.

First, we analyzed the different metadata used for all of our items in terms of Who, When, Where and What categories, then we decided to also group them in terms of their object types - that is: texts, physical artworks, multimedia and digital images.

When the standards were not explicitly stated, we decided to pick the ones we considered the most appropriate and coherent in accordance to the item’s type.

Moreover, DC and DCTerms are used for a general definition of the categories, while missing metadata correspondences are marked with “N/A”.
